I just finished the 3 book series about the life of Catherine De Medici. All 3 books were wonderful. Plaidy walked you thru the life of Catherine, her husband, children and all the people that touched their lives. It was not just about Catherine de Medici. I learned a great deal about the time period and it inspired me to read "For a Queen's Love" next which is about the life of Phillip of Spain, the husband of Catherine's daughter Elizabeth. Years ago I read her series on Queens of England which sparked my great love of historical fiction. For me it has to be the right mix of history and a story that will hold my interest so I can retain the history. I cannot stomach a soppy romance, nor bogged down with dry facts. I know the author will take liberties, but that is why I read many other books by the great historical fiction writers. It helps me sort out fact from fiction. I highly recommend this series.

Madame Serpent Jean Plaidy 9780099493174 Books Reviews

Read this book anticipating a good read however was greatly disappointed. The author portrays Catherine as a whining lacklustre spineless woman yet uses the title Madame Serpent. It is not until the last few pages that there is any indication that this woman has a backbone. Sorry to say not worth the time spent on reading this. There are better books available that paint a more realistic picture of this woman. There is so much more to her life than the years she was queen. The years after her husbands death were her defining years.
The story is gripping, an easy read and wonderfully detailed. Cant wait for the kindle edition to come out for books 2 and 3.I believe the main character will evolve during the trilogy, this sets the stage for what is to come.
Brings both the woman and the period to life, and provides an excellent foundation to understanding why in later life the woman became what she did. All three books highly recommended.
Jean Plaidy has fulfilled my yen for both, as well and the imaging of the lush interiors and the stark differences between haves and have nots--so glad that I ordered this! I will be checking out more of her writing as well!
have already ordered the second in the trilogy. I had not read any books by this author until very recently and I am very pleased to have discovered her. I enjoy nothing more than a great historical fiction book that is entertaining, well written, and well researched!
This was interesting if only because I know so little of the Italian and French courts. It was interesting to look up these characters on the internet and after doing so I really think she missed an opportunity to explore her childhood in more detail. Anyway, it's worth reading but I don't think anyone is going to finish this book with a great understanding of Catherine de Medici
I read The Courtesan by Diane Haeger and it was an excellent story told from the side of Diane de Poitiers. After reading that book I found myself highly sympathetic to the plight of Diane, but now after completing Madame Serpent I feel sorry for everyone involved in this love triangle. This book was well written, engaging, and entertaining. It gives a very accurate depiction of Catherine de Medici as a woman who did not inspire love and was by all accounts difficult and conniving, but it also presents a hidden aspect of her personality that may very well have been present and helps the reader to identify with the pain and humiliation she must have felt from the relationship between Henri and Diane. I highly recommend this book to any french history lovers!
