Wow! Stephen King put this on his list of best horror novels; I’m not a King reader (I could not finish The Shining, even in daytime, because I was just too scared). But unlike your typical haunted house story, this house is a newly-built house, not an ancient castle or creepy Victorian mansion. Nothing but tragedy touches the lives of the three different families who occupy the new house next door to Colquitt & Walter Kennedy and, as the horrors escalate, they decide to take matters into their own hands. Set in 1960s suburban Atlanta, this book grabbed me from beginning to end and I’ve re-read it several times since. Note: this is Siddons’ only horror novel; she usually writes genteel Southern fiction.Tags : The House Next Door [Anne Rivers Siddons] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The House Next Door Anne Rivers Siddons 9780061008733 Books Reviews
This was the first Anne Rivers Siddons book I read and I did enjoy it. It was a scarey story about a plot of land that was developed (the last one in the neighborhood) and anyone who lived there had horrible things happen to them. Three different families lived there and things escalated and got worse. The closest neighbors, the Kennedys, were aware of each family's problems starting with the first couple who built the house. They also befriended the architect. With each move a different neighbor got involved with the new owners and they would also get sucked into the nightmare happening. It was never explained why this was happening and it had to be stopped or would keep happening. This story kept you on the edge of your seat until the end. I would recommend it to anyone who likes suspense along with the paranormal.
This was an excellent read and I would highly recommend it. The ending was rather unexpected. This book for me was a real page turner.
This is the best Rivers Siddons book. Rivers Siddons takes the reader from the beginning to end adding details that make this her best story ever. By the end of the book my goosebumps had goosebumps.
If you want the creep factor and everything that goes with it - BUY THIS BOOK NOW!!
I had nightmares while reading this book - that's a good thing. This is how I judge a good/bad/great story - by how crazy creepy my dreams can be/get. This one - every night. One creeptastic nightmare after another. It may not happen to you.
I did not "see" the ending until it was upon me - that was the best part of this story. The characters were believable and really came to "life" as I read the story.

Brilliant Read.
First, I want to say I enjoyed this book. I don't read horror stories as a rule, but the reviews on this one were good so I gave it a shot. Also, I like books about houses. And this story had a house from hell. The story carried me along, and kept me from getting too irritated with the flowery, over-written narrative.
Walter and Colquitt (!!) Kennedy are the most self-satisfied, smug, snobbish couple you could imagine. They are living in their own bubble, with their very self-satisfied, smug and snobbish neighbors. Even towards the end of the story, when everything that can go wrong has, she says about the ordinary people who come to look at the house, " I realized that I had never in all my life really known that those others existed. I could not imagine their lives. We could not have spoken." That sums up her attitude about everyone who was not in her circle of friends.
Yet she is caring enough to go the distance for....... well, I won't tell about that. Every emotion she feels is overwhelming- horror, terror, heartwrenching-- everything she feels is over the top. No middle ground for her. And the love she and Walter have is also love like no other, etc. etc. It's all exaggerated to the point of overkill.
But, aside from the dramatic writing and the blatant snobbery, the book was good. And I'm glad I don't live in that high class neighborhood. Too spooky for me.
I read this book in 1978 and loved it - strange plotline for Mrs. Siddons. Couldn't stop reading - suspensful and exciting plot.
I just read this book this week in 2016(for the second time!!). Wow! I really appreciate this book now - beautifully written, great vocabulary, marvelous character development. Just a wonderful book- thought provoking , even better book than I originally thought.
I highly recommend this book - don't miss it!!!!
I've been steadily reading my way through Anne Rivers Siddons books and will no doubt continue to absorb every tome this iconic Southern writer has offered to her legions of fans. Without knowing what "The House Next Door" was about, I bought it sight unseen and dove right in. This books is eerily off-kilter, yet balanced and steeped in realism as it tells the story of a well to do, thirty-something year old Southern couple named the Kennedy's, who lead a rather common place life in the affluent suburbs. They are settled in their intentionally childless life, with their work and their neighborhood social life. They throw cocktail parties on their back patio and keep to their even-keeled rhythm of life until a house is built by an up and coming architect in the vacant lot next door. The author takes us through three couples who move into this particular house, one after the other, and strangely, one tragedy after another quickly transpires with a theme so coincidental, it couldn't be anything but a curse that envelopes the environs. Narrated in the voice of Colquitt Kennedy as she tells of the uncanny horrors that takes place next door, this book shocks and surprises all the way through and is one more reason why I am an Anne Rivers Siddons fan.
