This story was way too long as the author included long letters written between the daughter and her mother. although the letters provided context and history they weren't truly relevant to the story of the pendant. I think this is a so-called psychological mystery. I did not enjoy the read (for a book group) and can't recommend it. Maybe the author's other stories are better but this one is only mediocre at best.

The Shanghai Moon A Bill Smith/Lydia Chin Novel Bill Smith/Lydia Chin Novels S J Rozan 9780312245566 Books Reviews

This, for me, was one of the best in this series (so far)! Not only is Lydia the narrator (and she's always my favourite due to her quirky character and the Chinese American slant on life) but it involves WWII history of Shanghai which I found fascinating. Recommend this strongly.
I read this as part of my women of mystery book club. It was okay for me but some in my group loved it. I felt that parts of it didn't work at all but some parts were interesting. I liked the back story on the history of the gems but the current story more often than not bored me.
Rozan puts SO MUCH into her novels. It surprised me that "another mystery" could be so intelligent and absorbing. This is no lightweight, but nor is it 'heavy', though there is a lifetime of detail in there. As in her ABSENT FRIENDS New York novel, Rozan manages to create very full characters, and then give them crackling dialogue. I am very impressed by this author.
This was my first novel in this series and I really enjoyed reading it. The characterizations were vivid and believable, the premise of the story was intriguing, and the historical insights kept my attention and interest. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a complex 'Who Done It?' in a multi-ethnic setting with references to events in exotic places. And, while the plot and story were gripping, keeping track of potential suspects and their motives was like struggling through a maze at some points. But at least Ms. Rozan kept me guessing and coming back for more.
THE SHANGHAI MOON is the ninth installment in S.J. Rozan's award winning Lydia Chin / Bill Smith series. It's been seven years since we last had a look at our favorite New York City P.I.s.

This 'who done it/where is it' gives us a group of today's greedy types unfolding against the Shanghai of World War II. The 'Shanghai Moon' is a rumored heirloom of antique jade -- which may not exist -- and people are dying because of it. Chin and Smith once again do a professional job of unraveling what's afoot.

The author's two intervening standalone books, in which she experimented with and stretched her writing, resonate here with a lovely new patina surrounding Lydia and Bill. The prose is beautifully Rozan, and she has crafted a poignant history lesson in the letters chronicling the uncommon love story that backdrops the book. I can not overstate how much I enjoyed this book. Highly recommended!
I learned a great deal about Shanghai before, during and after WWII. The writer seems to know her history. Characters are believable and there is humor. Plausible plot. I liked it. Would recommend it.
Shanghai Moon is a definite page-turner. S.J. Rozan is very skilled at dropping bombs in exactly the right places to keep you wanting to read more, to find out what happens next. The plot is complex, but well laid out. Lydia Chin is a compelling and sympathetic character, easy to relate to and like. Rozan moves well between the earlier time of Rosalie Gilder in Shanghai, which read like flashbacks, and the modern murder investigation tied to her jewelry. All in all a great read!
