The Highland Clans; their origins and history by L.G. Pine is an excellent reference book. It gives you the basics of the clan structure, myths versus facts about tartans, kilts and the bagpipes that I found very informative. The second half of the book very historical and picks up with the clans in the 16th century. Before that time little was recorded or known of them in Scotland. Once James the IV came to the throne he had more interaction with them as he finally took the title of Lord of the Isles from Clan Donald, mightiest of the Clans to the Crown. We get some brief history up until the Jacobite rebellions. Then with the fall of James VII of Scotland there are 3 chapters dedicated to the clans activities in the various jacobite battles and struggles.
The book ends with a brief mention of clearances and struggles post Culloden but mentions how highland traditions and dress have become the symbols of all of Scotland. An ironic twist of fate for the clans.
A well organized book for any who want to learn about the Scottish Highland clans up to the 1745 rebellion.
