There's a reason Eileen Wilks is on my automatic purchase list. She writes stories I want to live in. Add pages go by I start to feel anxious about having to leave the world she's created. When I finish I'm actually bereft. One of the things I appreciate is that the characters learn the facts of the story as the reader does. We're auth then while they figure out what is going on and what to do about it. This really involves the reader in the unfolding events. I find it very compelling.
I also enjoy how Wilk's characters aren't perfect, impervious to pain, and always right. They make mistakes, they struggle with temper and worry and regret and fear. The magic involved isn't a fix-it; it's painful, messy and inconvenient at times.
We muddle along as the characters do, doing our best to understand to often-confusing events. It's a uniquely engaging method for the reader. We're not being told what's happening, how and why, we're not just passively observing, just along for the ride, we're actually involved in making sense of the story. It's very smart and maybe too challenging for those looking for a light easy read.
I gave the book four stars instead of five because, as a reader familiar with Amazon's rating system, I know I personally disregard all the gushing five star reviews. Perverse? Perhaps, but realistic.
I do definitely recommend. The World of the Lupi books should be read in order; I don't believe there are any that stand alone. All add to the characters and world being developed. The series is well worth your time.

Mind Magic A Novel of the Lupi Eileen Wilks 9780425263877 Books Reviews
I've always loved the Lupi world and nothing has changed.
As per usual we got an amazingly coherent and suspenseful story directed by our lead characters.
I also love that Eileen Wilks doesn't feel the need to press erotica into her books, she describes everything so that you can imagine it without details.
We know exactly how Rule and Lily feel for each other, it jumps off the page.
The plot is innovative, Wilks never ceases to amaze me.
Spoilers
This time its about the dragons and I loved them getting a more prevalent role in this story.
Mika has left Washington and everybody is wondering where he is, Lily is dealing with some secondary effects to her mind-talk with the dragons and Rule has to deal with some clan business for Leidolf.
Before they even get started to set out what they were intending things go very south...
Both Lily and Rule have to fight without each other and their Unit 12 is currently on lock down.... as is their shadow unit...
A lot of things happen at once. Rule gets arrested, Ruben gets arrested and Lily gets kidnapped....Each of them has their particular battles to fight and fears to overcome, and all is done again with class.
I love Wilks' "bad" characters, they're not twisted per se, though they can be, but they still feel human. I expect that we will see more of this one in the future, since the Big Bitch had her hands on him.
The new addition to Clan Leidolf is most certainly an intriguing character and for future stories, she will I believe provide more insight into Lily, dragons and herself.
What I loved the most is how Wilks' captured Aspergers on paper.. she really has a good insight on how these people with such an affliction behave and feel.
The dragon twist of Mika going female was a little wink to the parthenogeneses of several species of vertebrates, but done with a little twist.
If there is one thing I can admire its a smart woman. )
In short Suspense all over.
The World of the Lupi is an intense and complicated world. I really enjoy it but sometimes I have to re-read parts of it more than once and still feel a little lost with all the technical/magical jargon that is used which takes my enjoyment from a 5 star to a 4 star book.
I love Lily and Rule and always enjoy reading about them. In this book they are back from their honeymoon but Lily is on medical leave because she is having some hallucinations due to learning how to Mind Speak. She and Rule are staying at Ruben Brook's house and hoping to spend more time with the Leidolf Clan. Unfortunately, a new enemy has cropped up and is targeting both Rule and Ruben. Lily and Rule end up apart for a great deal of this book but they were always front and center in each other's thoughts and decisions. The conflict was intense and there were a lot of little pieces that needed to be put together. I loved getting to know the brownies a bit more and it brought some much needed lightness to the book.
Another great story that opens up some interesting possibilities for the future. My only question is what happened to Cullen and Cynna? They were brought up and we were told Cullen was missing and then ....
